Surgical milestone in Bamako: First microsurgical breast reconstruction in Mali
February 21 – March 01, 2025, Bamako, Mali
As part of a humanitarian mission with Interplast, a microsurgical breast reconstruction operation was performed for the first time in Bamako. This represents an important contribution to the establishment of a breast center in a developing country like Mali.
Medical successes of the mission
A total of 17 operations were carried out during the week-long mission. One focus was on treating children and adults with scar contractures on their arms and legs caused by severe burns or following accidents. These surgical interventions restored the mobility of the affected extremities and improved their functionality in the long term.
The historic moment was the first microsurgical breast reconstruction using the DIEP flap technique ever performed in Mali. An unused microscope on site made it possible to perform this complex procedure.
A total of six patients who had one or both breasts removed due to breast cancer were able to have their breasts reconstructed using various techniques.
Operating results
All procedures went without complications, apart from a small postoperative hemorrhage, which was successfully treated the following day. The interdisciplinary collaboration between anesthesia, surgery and aftercare ensured optimal treatment results.
Outlook and requirements
This mission impressively demonstrates how complex microsurgical plastic surgery can also be performed in developing countries. The continuous need for reconstructive surgery in Mali is made clear by the regular admission of children with severe burns. As tumor diseases are often advanced in developing countries and local chemotherapy and radiotherapy are not available, radical surgery with the need for reconstructive procedures is usually necessary.
Interplast currently carries out six missions a year in Africa. Further missions are planned, including in the West Bank. Funding for this humanitarian work is dependent on donations.
Supporting the mission
Reconstructive surgery in crisis countries is only possible with the support of donors. Information on supporting the work of Interplast Switzerland is available on the organization’s homepage.
